The celebration of the wonder of…

Sometimes those strange albeit well frankly bizarre headlines float through my head. I sometimes wonder if my true calling wasn’t be be a yellow journalize in the early part of the 20th century (man becomes gorilla). It’s the only way I can explain the things that rattle around in my head. Anyway, there is no celebration of the wonder of, its just a headline that floated into my head this am.

Jet lag is killing me today. Not sure why today over yesterday and the day before. Usually Europe is a 3 day thing, so hopefully today is the last day. Last night I fell asleep at 8 pm. That isn’t right, you wait your whole life to be an adult so you can stay up late without anyone telling you to go to bed. Falling asleep at 8 pm is just, well sad.

I need to clean out my closet-o-old technology soon. I am posting a few older things on ebay, but frankly most of it is just junk so it needs to go into the receptacle of all things useless to history. That way in 2000 years people can root around in our old landfills and try to piece together what we were doing. I wonder what history will paint of the things we throw away.

Actually I wonder what history will paint of Ebay and other things like that. Junk transference has to be something archeologists drool over. “Look, these people traded useless paper as a currency. I wonder what other nasty habits they had.”

Good day!

Find me a way home

in the darkness

as the wind cold

swirls around you

you struggle with the lock.

The metal is cold,

and unforgiving

reminding you of January 1987

and September 2003

remember?

Whispering to avoid the cold

your fingers turn quietly inward

bending around themselves for warmth

tucking inside themselves and

forgetting how to tie shoes

and lace boots

to sit in a quiet dark hole

and me with no way home

a lock struggling against my freezing fingers

refusing to let go

cold unforgiving metal

reminding me of pain from long ago…

let me go

you scream into the wind

swirling around you

but in the darkness and shadows

even your voice is gray

as it slides down the metal

cold to the touch

and reverberates in the empty silence of the swirling wind.

Soon there will be no I

to let go;

as you sink to the ground

September 2003 overwhelming you

the storm overtaking you

and the tears

like rivers of blood

pour to the ground and freeze.

Can you hear me?

In the darkness all seems gray

I see the white wall

whitewashed wall?

what stain does it cover?

What stain does the white hide?

you cannot see in the darkness

your ears cupped like

tin cans

encompassing

surrounding

fulfilling

the sound

but nothing returns

what does the white cover?

my eyes?

my heart?

my tears?

I cannot tell any longer

what once was white

what once was covered with white

what is now white

all is becoming a shadow

and I am lost.

Its my last day in London and now I’m going home….or other Beatles songs :-)

The last day in London – it should have been a Beatles song (on my last in London all I did I was cry)..but I have never heard it nor do I think they recorded it so my gut is its just me on that one.

London is one of my very favorite cities (Amsterdam and Bangkok are the only cities I love more. Bangkok because I lived there and I understand its rhythm’s and heartbeat. Amsterdam because ever time I have ever been there I have had a simply wonderful time.) But London is a very nice trip every time I come. This of course got me thinking about my favorite cities in the world:

  • Bangkok
  • Amsterdam
  • London
  • Kuala Lumpor
  • Singapore
  • Chicago
  • New York
  • Seattle
  • Milan
  • San Francisco

After the first three the rest are pretty much equal – I love each of the cities above for specific things. Each of the things is either crazy or personal so I won’t list them right now. There are a number of cities I haven’t been to that I would like to have a chance to visit.

Are you loyal?

Letting your mind wander

My thought for today – loyalty. What does loyalty mean? Does it mean you accept without question anything someone who is a friend does? Does loyalty have layers like human emotions? The outer circle of loyalty allowing you to accept the foibles of your friend without running away. The next layer allowing you to stand by your friend in times of trouble knowing that if in fact your friend did what was said about them you could walk away? And then finally the inner circle of loyalty where no matter what happens you will be there, you will not walk away (run away) regardless?

What layer are most people on for most people? Do we spend our lives keeping people on the outer layer? Is that the easiest way? The safest way? I was thinking aloud on my other blog about the concept of the media lens turning upon itself. That perhaps that lens was focused too tightly on what might be or could be.That lens a revealer of the “lack of loyalty.” One arm of the media biting the hand that feeds them over and over. A display perhaps of disloyalty.

What does loyalty mean?

Is loyalty not saying anything about someone else?  Or is that ethics? Or is that more likely self preservation (if I don’t say anything about someone – they won’t say anything about me). I don’t believe that loyalty falls below that line. The tit-for-tat line of you do this for me, I will do this for you. I believe loyalty rises above that line presenting itself as a condition we all have or perhaps we all should have.

Loyalty shouldn’t have layers.

Loyalty shouldn’t be conditional.

Loyalty is the condition by which we are bound and the behavior that shows we are aware of our impact on the world.

Where do you want to be?

It is a question that you ask yourself, you ask about your career and you ask your family members. Where do you want to be can be a metaphysical, spiritual and finally it can be a geographic question. I ask myself that question and my wife and I ask that question as both parents and as a couple. Where do you want to be?

I listened to part of the State of the Union last night (jet lag got me up at 2 am and I couldn’t sleep). I loved Barrack’s message about where our country is, at the cusp of a great cross road. We need change. We need to improve education. Those themes resonated with me. Actually they aren’t past tense in the where I am question. They are present tense as resonate with me. We need as a country and a world to work together to move forward. The time of inequity has to be over.

All people are created equal.

We need to educate the world better.

It has now been more than 20 years since the last time I taught public school students. I don’t miss the frustrations of being a teacher (low pay and long hours) but I do miss the kids. Don’t get me wrong, of the two jobs Teacher vs. Parent, I would much rather be a parent. But I miss hanging out in a world where every idea is fresh. A world where it is ok to have an idea in the first place that is slightly different. In a world where frankly “what if” is actually a question you can ask.

What if? It was a game my students and I played many times taking current events and seeking different outcomes. We would discuss science projects with a What if discussion first. What if we mixed more vinegar in the water with the pieces of limestone, would that increase the rate or amount of calcium crystals formed or both? What if we altered the acid rain experiment to more simulate reality. The acidity of rain changes pending sulphur sources and other variables.

It was the way I addressed variables as a teacher.

I miss that world. That innocence of what if around you as you thought. Its not something that we as adults encourage, what if. In fact we have entire professions (Actuaries and Risk Management professionals) who spend their lives trying to minimize what if.

I just don’t know, maybe kids have it right.
