Around you the noise buzzes

but you are right

confidence

oozes around you

as you approach

the eyes turned

your opinion

right

all

wait

the pronouncement quiet

but all hear

all know

for you are right

the statue,

buried as in Shelley

the only remains of an empire

What was

will never be again

but they fear

the wrath

like Zeus’ fire bolts launched from on high

always right

Do you see?

The whispers begin to spread

your soapbox grows out of the floor

and rising towards heaven

you ascend

you are right.

Eyes watch you

eyes see you

but do you hear?

Your ears closed

with sand

your rise to heaven begun

you are right

as sand falls from your ears and you wonder

was there something

there

you did not hear?

Around the flickering fire

the smoke rising

as the torch is lit

and passed

each one quietly acknowledging the

god of fire

the power of the flame

touching it

with eyes

(hand burn but you knew that

learned that long ago)

as the smoke reaches up

and up

watching it float among the people

seeking pockets

and lining

to hide in

the smoke swirling around you

the lost memories

of what once was

sliding into the smoke

and

causing your eyes to tear

just a little

for we are men

in touch with the memory

but letting it go

always letting it go…

As though a candle

flickering

its light struggling to get out

I am the whispering wind

and flowing around the candle

blow the light

around

up and down

Spreading the light across the floor

the cat chasing it

trying with declawed paws

to reach it

shred it

kill it

play with it?

Then the quiet comes

within the quiet

the last steps taken

the last steps

the last

last

it falls

we fall

and the trees laugh…

Fair

What does the word Fair mean?

First off let’s examine the word. Fair can be an event held where people come together. It can be something we use with our children, a word that is supposed to help them feel things are ok in the world around them. But we use the word to help them assimilate something that we as adults know wasn’t fair.

So the use of the word and the application of the concept isn’t “fair.”

Can human beings achieve fair?

It is a question that haunts me. Has haunted me for a long time. I believe my children deserve fair. I believe they deserve a chance to see the world as a good place where the actions of a good person will result in good things happening.

I believe in fair, because that is the only way the world seems fair to me.

How do you set the bar…

Setting the bar…

Its very hard to set a bar in space that people then attempt to hurdle over. While you can build a “strawperson” of what that looks like it remains somewhat open to interpretation when you have more than 2 or 3 people engaged.

I’ve been thinking about setting that bar all week. The first thought I had was to explain the concept of where I thought the bar was. But that is open to other people interpreting the bar so it really doesn’t work as well as I would like. The other thought is to use the Pole Vault analogy. The concept there being you want to clear the bar. It’s a democratic concept as well, Pole Vaulters don’t really want to blow over the bar by a foot or more. They want to clear the bar by inches. They launch themselves into a visualized point in space to clear a bar that is 17 or 18 feet above them.

Does that concept work with a  bar? We are trying to “clear the bar” not hurdle the bar.

Well the thing that is missing is the visualization of where the bar is in space. Launching towards something that you can’t “visualize” before hand is risky. What do you need to visualize a bar? The pole vaulter doesn’t go out and stand in the pit looking up at the bar (well some of them do – but not during a meet they do that before they actually have to jump). They sit by themselves (or with a bunch of people it doesn’t matter) and they visualize the pole they are holding bending and then shooting them into the air.

But they know where the bar is…

How do you set the bar?

Effective meetings and the dancing bears…

Innovation and the chase of perfection. There is always something we can do better. As technologists, as architects and as human beings. We race to bring about all the things in our control and place them into controlled solutions and hope the things we don’t control, don’t explode. I wonder however if there is a better way. A unified modeling language for variables within the design and human interactions we have.

Meetings:

What types of meetings are there?

  • Unstructured
  • Managed
  • Brain storming

Are there other types of meetings? Defining the three types of meetings with first unstructured. Unstructured meetings can be very successful (strong leader) or horribly offsetting (unmanaged chaos). The overall impact of of an unstructured meeting without a strong leader is significant. But what happens when someone other than the leader tries to provide structure to the meeting, or there are two below average leaders trying to lead an unstructured meeting? In my book transitional services I talk about the idea stifling impact of this type of meeting. It destroys the open communication required for effective meetings. Managed and brain storming meetings are very easily understood, a managed meeting as a distinct starting time and agenda. There is only one person managing the speaking (but not the only speaker). Brain storming meetings should have no set beginning but a maximum length where ideas are thrown out. The only structure here should be an agreement to brain storm first.

Effective meetings, and successful meetings are two very separate things. There are I am sure many other types of meetings. I once wrote about meetings that featured dancing bears with colored markers, as a description of an unstructured meeting that in the end wasn’t effective.

How do you create meetings that build the right framework for the chase for perfection?

Songs, poems and other expressions of the human condition

Can it be that it was all so simple then? Or has time rewritten every line?

I should have never blogged about song lines stuck in my head. They are still stuck in my head and floating around and there are a few more than I wrote down before. Why is that? Why do certain lines of music connect with you so well that you end up keeping them in your head?

Or someone hums, says or sings the song and suddenly it is stuck in your head. You can’t stop singing the song yourself. It sticks in your head. You end up working it into a conversation with someone and then they are stuck on the same thing as you.

Why is that?

I suspect if you think about it, songs are today what poems and songs were 200 years ago. There wasn’t a radio so we didn’t often have an opportunity to hear the song, but the poem could be read aloud by anyone. Songs and Poems have a lot in common. They are aural and oral expressions of language meant to bring us to a vision or meaning.  A literature professor once said to me “the written words of songs, and poems are expressions of the human condition in small digestible bites.”

Time to get rolling today!
