1 Xbox setup.

1 more box opened.

But now I am 13 boxes behind my goal. I am going to take a 1/2 day Friday to try and catch up. What is the point of setting a goal if you don’t at least try and hit it.

We walked down to the 5 Guys burger joint in the square for dinner last night. Its really kind of fun to be able to safely walk to the movies, dinner or for that matter even shopping. We had a blast last night meandering our way through the neighborhood on the way to dinner. Barb is taking the kids to the pool today (and to get their neighborhood id’s). Their (the kids) stolen days of extra summer are over Monday (and Tuesday) as all three head back to school.

When I was in school I hated school. If I only knew then what I know now, I would have reveled more in school. But as the famous quote goes “youth is wasted on the young.” Hindsight is such a glorious tool to consider.

Time to get rolling and get to work – loving the new job.

(interesting thing – watched a video about the impact of negativity in management – would LOVE TO show it to a large number of people. Let me just say there are many ways to solve problems and frankly negative is never one of them. Perhaps a compliment to start and then well say something nice.

If only I knew then what I know now.

Have you ever noticed how some people walk? Not sure why it hit me today but as I was walking into work I saw three distinct walking styles. Loping – or what I would call the hunter walk. Measured, or what I would call the thinking man’s walk, and finally a more interesting walk that involved moving from side to side of the hall as though not sure which side to be on.

Human beings are such interesting creatures when you think about it. They live in a world where they walk in an uncomfortable upright fashion and within that world have so many different walking styles its nearly one to one (people to styles). There are people who literally walk as though they are climbing a mountain. I call them up-walkers. There are people who walk as though the weight of the world is on their shoulders (I call them drupe walkers).

We humans are an interesting collection of genetic mismatches.

I got six boxes unpacked yesterday against a goal of 10. That puts me a day behind already. I am never going to get all the boxes unpacked.

1968 number of posts to both of my blogs. Closing in on 2000.

I spent time yesterday looking for a window based dog door. The back door is one of those French doors so there is no way to put in a temporary dog door. There is however a window on one end of the deck and her majesty doesn’t seem to mind overly much going through a window so a little research was in order.

I finally found one. I need to talk to them which I will do before ordering but it was amazing. You actually have to know how wide your dog is. They don’t allow for variables (width=how well her eyes work on whomever is eating at the time). They also have more than 20 different window sizes. Ah the joys of moving. Oh well. The new place is great and the neighborhood is fantastic. We don’t have to clean the pool or pay for lawn moving anymore (although I do miss our Lawn Guy Jeff Wagoner.

Blog Shout Outs:

Great companies to work with on the south side of Indianapolis (Greenwood/Southport area)

  • Karl’s heating and cooling
  • ABC Pools (Brian simply rocks)
  • Waggoner Lawn Care (Jeff is a great person – and does super work)
  • Kelly’s Cleaning (Kelly is an awesome person)

My wife has this great system for picking fantastic people and all of the above are her choices. So the other kudo goes to my wonderful wife. She is an amazing person.

Dish Network – set-up (missing one remote so can only use one TV)

Verizon – voicemail not active, phone not active

Internet – still waiting for approval to do the cable modem run. Verizon offers DSL, but only their 2nd lowest package.

House – 2000 boxes in, 12 unpacked so far.

Someday (figure right about the time the lease on the house is up) we will be unpacked.

I was/am looking for a new laptop. I need something with a little more zing in the video card department that is still portable. I love my ASUS 73 box – it is a workhorse for audio editing now (speaking of which I need to post  some new Fred and ed stories). The ASUS network remains my personal media player but again with no Internet (see above) that isn’t useful right now and finally there is my ASUS slate, which is a great creativity device but again doesn’t have the oomph for video.

So  new laptop.

  • I highly recommend http://www.powernotebooks.com
  • They are professional
  • Customer service focused
  • Build a great high quality box (I got my soaped up ASUS G73 from them)

Their web site is easy to use, and they offer a large variety of customizable laptops. I choose the MSI (my first non-ASUS in a long time). The configurator was easy to use and the sales representative called me within 45 minutes of my posting the order. I am looking forward to the box arriving and setting this bad boy up. Of course if I still don’t have Internet, well then its probably moot at that point.

The newer Intel chips are really amazing – low power consumption paired with very high computing power. It seems amazing to me the quality of the systems you can get now.

I will post a review of the device when it arrives.

First night spent in the new house in Maryland. It was a pleasant night – the new bed is very comfortable. Fran is happy as she has her couch back. She isn’t as happy about the amount of times she is being let out. Two accidents in three days for her -  is really something that hasn’t happened in nearly 10 years. I suspect Fran is telling us something. Its either we aren’t doing a good job letting her out, or she isn’t happy about the move overall.

Comcast can’t install a cable modem this week due the fact that the house was never wired for cable. Who has a house anymore that isn’t wired for high speed Internet? I checked – no FIOS and really only low speed DSL (not even one of their best packages). How do you live in our modern world without high speed Internet? I guess its going to be lots of time at the local coffee shop. (still have to get approval from the owners to even do the cable install as they have to run a cable from the neighbors house to our house).

I guess I could always head off to the office – but then I wouldn’t have the joy of unpacking. I’ve gotten six boxes (including all my clothes) today. I am heading down to the basement when my blog is done to start unpacking there. I need to find the remote for the dish receiver in the great room. Otherwise we have to use the manual method and that is slow at best.

Somehow a fly has worked its way into the house and is bugging me. Time to go unpack the fly swatter

Two songs keep running through my had – one by Arlo Guthrie and the other is an old song I used to sing for the kids. Not sure why, although spending every day and night with the kids (other than escaping to work) for the past few days probably brings those songs to the top of mind. I used to sing a song to the boys and the bean before they went to sleep when they were little. Not sure how that tradition got started, I think it was the bean telling me I couldn’t read books to her anymore. Or it probably was trying to do some sort of every night ritual before bed to make that transition a little easier.

I think if I did it now they would kill me. But that is another story.

We’ve tried two wonderful restaurants in the Gaithersburg (Kentlands) area. Last night was seafood. The restaurant was great and 30% of our check went to support the local Habitat for Humanity chapter. It is nice to be in a place where fresh seafood doesn’t mean freshly frozen and placed on a jet to be to you in 48 or more hours. Fresh means it came off the boat yesterday and you eat it today! Even fresher fish when you head even closer to the ocean.

Speaking of oceans, when the boys were little we went on a cruise. Before we left the harbor in Miami, Nick was finishing an apple. He had eaten it down to the core so I threw it in the ocean. He looked at me, looked at the ocean and said “apple, ocean.” Every time we passed a large body of water (or large to a 3 year old at least) he would say “apple, ocean.” It is amazing the things you remember about your kids.

There is something (see my review of yesterday) exhilarating about driving around with the top down. Nick and I went for a little ride last night after dinner. He had a blast. Wind in our hair, blowing down the highway, cranking the tunes. I felt like I was 18 again. Until I got out of the car and my back wouldn’t bend. Then I felt every bit of not 18 again.

The good news is we upgraded to a tempurpedic bed that is supposed to be really good for tossing and turning as well as early morning back pain. I will post a review later once we have it and I can test it personally.

Our moving truck arrived yesterday – my amazing wife spent the entire day with the crew unpacking the truck. She wasn’t allowed to unpack anything but had to spend the day helping/organization the workers. She is simply an amazing project manager and I am glad she is on our team (team Andersen!!!).

We found a Greek restaurant yesterday (our favorite Indiana Greek place is the Trojan Horse in Bloomington Indiana. If you are ever in Indiana and want the best Gyro or Humus, The Trojan Horse is simply amazing).

Time to get rolling for work this morning.
