The year that was.

  • After 15 years I left Microsoft this year.
  • After 12 years we sold our house and left Indiana. We moved to Maryland – our third state in 20 years.
  • The three fitbit friends I had quit. Sad.
  • 2.3 million steps since June.
  • I walked over 1000 miles this year.
  • Published 720 blogs (2 blogs a day)
  • Hit 1000 posts on both blogs
  • Published 12 podcasts this year including 2 new Fred and Ed stories.
  • My sons graduated to middle school.
  • My daughter graduated high school and is now in college.
  • My book is finally out (see above) Transitional Services can be found at my author page (above) or any bookseller.

I went from an average of 80 flights per year to 12 this year. What a change that has been. I went from being gone more than 50% of the time to being home 90% of the time. That has been the biggest joy and adjustment for me as well as my family. I love not feeling rushed or that I have to get more done on Saturday and Sunday than I can do. Its wonderful to be able to come home on a Monday and finish up weekend stuff.

For 2012 my goals are:

  • A museum a month
  • A podcast a month
  • 90% blog rate (2 blogs 90% of the time)
  • A new book
  • Lose 10 pounds
  • Walk 1000 miles
  • Hit 3 million steps with my fitbit

From beginning to end.

I have come over the past few years to realize that I am a stats guy. I love the concepts of statistics and how numbers, people and theories come together. It is an interesting concept that continues to expand outward from where we are to where we may be.

The evolution of a theory is the one thing that intrigues me the most. First of all, someone has to think of things differently. You can’t think of the problems as the same as they always have been when building a new theory. Second there is a paradigm shift that has to be recognized. Sometimes we struggle with the reality of the shift and forget the new concept.

From the beginning of a concept to the instantiation of a theory it is an interesting journey.

There are negative and positive theories. A negative theory is a view of a current system or solution and assuming or talking about its failure points. A positive theory is closer to the blue ocean theory view. Where the solution is something net new. You have to have both types of theories although most people like the negative as it is easier to generate (easier to make fun of new ideas than to have one yourself).

Movie day – we are going to Sherlock Holmes. I am looking forward to that. Sitting with my sons and lovely bride and enjoying a movie. The bean has to work today.  Although last night she made the most amazing Chicken Soup with rice for dinner. It was truly amazing soup.

2.3 million steps year to date. I don’t think I will make 2.5 million by the end of the year but I am well on the way to my goal of 3 million steps! Got two podcasts up a month late, and will try again to post the new Fred and Ed story for those of you who follow along at home. The irony of me having told my students stories about twins more than 20 years ago and to have twins now is not lost on me.

Today is catch up and rest day, although based on my fitbit week I’ve probably rested enough for the week. However, long walks are very relaxing and help me get focused so that will help in the short run!

Its also get your crap updated, backed up and all around technology focus day. I have been working on my double backup system for awhile now (home server which remains a rock star and Carbonite for the critical stuff). I should have the full system operational in about a month with the critical systems in the house backed up at least twice.

I missed 5 blogs for all of 2011, that seems pretty good. For the next few days I am going to do reviews and fun things I got for chirstimas as well as posting a couple of interesting pictures from the week of Christmas.

Time to get rolling on the day!

A tribute to my hero Neil Young.

My apologies for a few days off in the past couple of weeks. Its really hard to blog during the holidays. Between blogs, exercise and family the first two always lose out. Family remains much more critical for me.

Listening to Pandora this am, enjoying a series of Neil Young songs. I first listened to Neil Young in 1968. From then I was hooked on his music and words. My original favorite song of his came from his membership in CSNY in the late 1960’s (four dead in Ohio) and then later the Harvest LP. I have ruined 5 different copies of the Harvest LP over the years from playing them. I have liked a lot of different kinds of music over the years but Neil Young remains my personal favorite.

An Artists career is a journey from light to dark and that journey is where the fan accompanies the artist. You find something (Man needs a maid for me) that rings true to you. You measure that against others (old man and heart of gold) that stretch away from you like a great highway. On that road you see bumps, turns and of course long stretches that are the journey itself.

That journey musically is why Neil Young is my hero. He has shown more faces than Eve in building a career that has expanded beyond what was to become a guide to the greater journey.

Thank you Mr. Young for more than 40 years of musical enjoyment.

I finally posted a couple of new podcasts yesterday (its been 6 months). They are at my podbean account listed above. They are also available via Zune and Itunes.

There are a number of interesting workout devices that are available this year. From heart rate monitors and blood pressure monitors that connect to your iphone. The time of connectivity is expanding. Now you can be connected all the time from all aspects of what you are doing and where you are. Of course I have argued that increasing connectivity beyond where it is today creates and expands the risk of the Internet having a senior moment (saw an interesting book about senior moments in the store – it scares me that I have been having those since I was 12 years old).

In the end connectivity will drive network activity. This in turn will clog the already clogged arteries of the Internet even further. Of course smart developers will then find ways to move their packets to alternate paths and the overflow will clog those as well. The best analogy for this is from my childhood. I used to love to go to Indiana University Basketball games. They were held at Assembly Hall which is located on the north side of the city. There is one quasi highway that runs north of assembly hall. The rest of the streets are smaller feeder streets. 17,000 fans fill that auditorium every game. The streets were designed to move 2,000 people over the course of an 8 hour day (Bloomington Indiana has a population of about 80,000 people so you can image what clustering nearly 1/4 of one place into one place will do to traffic).

Over the next few years the Internet will be that way as well. Events will drive massive amounts of available bandwidth to certain areas. Governments will begin locking off sections of networks for citizen protection further reducing overall bandwidth. The rubber band only stretches so far before it reaches it capacity and the Internet is the same. When the game is over, 8 times the normal flow of people stream out of Assembly hall. What will happen to the Internet when many more times 8 times the traffic hits one location?

The burp.

2.25 million steps. It simply amazes me when I think about it, not that I took that many steps but that I hadn’t know before just how much I walked every week. I actually find I take the long way now when possible to add steps to my day.

Today on this eve of eve day I am considering a number of things I haven’t thought about for awhile. The first is one that I talk about frequently but I sometimes forget to say it to them, I am proud of my children. They are great kids and are truly becoming wonderful human beings. I truly enjoy spending time with them, not because they are my kids and it’s a job or responsibility but because they are funny, creative and interesting people to talk to.

I remember the conflict from before and frankly having less conflict now is much easier to deal with.

Of course, they will leave someday. Grow up enough that they can separate and move on to their separate lives so there is a bittersweet set of memories and realities there. It makes me sad sometimes when I watch them and realize their time with me is slipping away.

What does it really mean?

The fact that my sons and daughter love sushi now makes me happy. We went out for my birthday (Beanie was working) but the boys added Eel to the list of sushi they like.  It made me happy to think the days of picky eaters are over. There was a time when we couldn’t go anywhere without slices of American cheese (and thank you very freaking much Kraft, it had to be Kraft American Cheese – she hated the much cheaper store brand and she also hated Velveeta’s slices.)

14 years ago I had to work in Columbus Ohio on Christmas Eve. I ended up having to solve some issues the customer’s mail system was having until midnight and then drove across the state of Ohio, all the way to Bloomington Indiana to celebrate Christmas. My 5 year old daughter was very angry at me about that. To her, missing Christmas eve was a big deal.

Now she has to work on Christmas Eve. The shoe as it were is on the other foot. And sadly or perhaps correctly I feel sorry for her. She has worked a ton this past week, the disadvantage of being in college, and being in retail.
