What are the qualities that manifest greatness? I was thinking yesterday on a break from my all day meeting about what greatness was. I have seen greatness a few times in my life even talked to the great people a few times. I came away each time with a feeling of joy and wonder, that in fact these people existed in the world.

I am wondering this because as I think back over my encounters throughout the years I am not struck by one quality that denoted the presence of greatness. I’ve met people who had minds that were amazing. They could do things mentally that other people struggled to do, and they dispatched those tasks easily. I’ve met people who could do things physically that were simply amazing.

  • What is that quality that denotes greatness?
  • Is it the quiet assumption of the right thing to do?
  • The willingness to do whatever it takes by the means required?
  • Or is it something beyond the existence, a transcendence?

The questions run so deep for such a simple man (a line from Super tramp’s Logical Song).

Sometimes my mind wanders off track a little.

The new Retina Macintosh and Johnny English Reborn!

I got a new Retina Macintosh. I have to say the hype is worth it. The screen is simply amazing. I watched a movie from iTunes and the screen was simply amazing – I played the same one side by side with my iPad and the two screens were simply incredible. The new OS (ships with the new Apple OS for Macs) is very clean and easy.

The thing I have come to love – Apple’s software policy. Buy things from them once use it on as many PC’s as you own. Sort of like an all you can eat enterprise agreement from Microsoft except that for home users you don’t pay per user. You simply buy applications once and use it on your computers. Its really quite nice.

I was a Macintosh guy 20 years ago. The thing that in the end drove me away from the Macintosh world was SCSI. SCSI required custom cables and in the end was simply to hard to use and manage. The thunderbolt system of Apple’s scares me a little now as well. Unique, not adopted by other PC makers, while Apple’s market share is growing, the remain a Niche computer maker. As a wise man once said be careful when you go out on a limb, someone may saw it off while you are on it.

We went on a family walk yesterday, and then watched the new Johnny English Reborn movie. Rowan Atkinson is simply an amazing physical comedian. We all enjoyed the movie. Its one of those physical comedy movies that you can’t help laughing at loudly, so it is best to rent those and watch them at home, lest you are the only one in the theater who laughs and everyone looks at you like you are crazy. I used to watch the Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers with my mother. Both of us laughed out loud frequently so the renting option would probably have been a better way to go.

I have not been on a trip since October 2011 for work. This week is my first out of state trip since then. After 15 years on the road you don’t realize just how tiring that is until you stop.

We went to the international spy museum yesterday. Its an interesting look at the technology involved in spying up until about the 80’s. They allude to some of the innovations since then but if you think about it they probably couldn’t show those anyway. We ended up having a blast. And we didn’t have to take the car because we were able to use the Metro system. Its nice to live in a city where your car gets you point to point when you need it, but that you can also go by public transportation when you need to. You can tell folks that have used public transit a lot, they are the ones that stand up with no issues. I had to stand up for awhile on the way back and frankly I just don’t have the balance to be effective at that.

I am taking some pictures of Dylan today – before and after bath (as well as pictures of Fran before and after). They get along really well now, standing side by side in the laundry room barking at the stupid humans that dare to traverse the lawn of doom.

Let’s finish today with a few random thoughts:

  • What caused me to suddenly start equating cloud computing with dating? It started about a week and a 1/2 ago and now it is stuck in my head. I typed a bunch of it out on my other blog but there are still things floating around.
  • Allergies are worse for me this year than in years past. Why do allergies get worse? Or what is it about moving to a new place that gets me every time? Cincinnati – first year miserable allergies. Back in Indiana (greenwood) first year miserable allergies. Maryland first year miserable allergies. I just don’t get it.
  • Steve Martin and Bill Murray in “Little Shop of Horrors” always make me laugh. Why do I find that scene to be so funny? It is at best horribly wrong.

I would like to start today’s blog with a couple of apologies. First to all my friends in the U.K. whom I have referenced Boris the Twit or, the honorable Mayor of London – we have one who is worse and we sent him to you. My apologies.

Second for my subscribed and loyal readers. My deepest apologies for the ads that were on my blog last week. I logged in to my blog from a non-logged in machine and saw the ads that had been filling my page. I am very sorry. I understand wordpress needs to be a business and that ads are the quickest way to support a revenue stream. However the ads that were on my site were a bit on the iffy side. Of course the predominance of Internet ads today focus on buying a car or getting a boy/girl friend so they were to be expected. I have had them removed from my site but still I am very sorry.

The boys, Dylan and I went on our second long walk yesterday. We took water so as not to be dehydrated when we got back. I really enjoy hearing my sons talk about the world around them. It is such a fantastic experience when you get to talk to your children and hear how they are addressing the world. I am very proud of my children. They are wonderful human beings and all three are great orators. Although Nick would argue he doesn’t like people enough to talk to them.

Our new car reached the shores of the US (in Baltimore) yesterday. Just a couple of days and we are off and driving!

Every four years we embark on an Olympic journey. Glad to know that Mitt is carrying the torch for America. I just wish he had lit the torch before leaving the country.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Olympics. I am not sure why a person not currently holding an office in this country needs to go overseas. It seems like a lot of politicking with no real value for anyone.

A smart person once told me, its not about what you say its about what you do.

I need to clean my office which I suspect is a shock to no one.

My office at LMCO is pristine. I keep that one clean. The only things I have on my desk are a fan (it gets a little hot sometimes) and an IPOD dock to play music. The rest of my desk is clear of clutter. At home, the opposite is true. It’s the Jekyll/Hyde thing. My wife’s home office is pristine, but she pits out every car she gets in. I guess everyone has that one place they just let go.

The boys, Dylan and I went on an end of day walk around the neighborhood last night. Not as far as I would go normally but when it is 100 degrees you just don’t go as far. We had a blast talking about various things. Verizon had their FIOS signup booth so, I did! Paying less for more felt right to me for some reason.

I’ve had two people request pictures of Dylan. Its on my list I promise. I am just never in the same place as the dog and the camera when he is being cute. Actually he is pretty cute most of the time. Lately he has taken to sleeping on the end of the bed with pillows, last night he actually moved the pillows so that he would be more comfortable.

Yesterday while I was trying to finish up a little research (I am looking for interesting news feed items to post) he decided that 20 minutes was all I was allowed on the computer. Like the annoying program we have on our work computers (you are due a keyboard break) he reached over with his big fat head and moved my arm off the keyboard and mouse pad. He then looked at me like “dude, get over the computer there is a living creature here with needs.” When I didn’t respond to that, he started carrying stuff from my corner of the basement upstairs and leaving the items at the top of the stairs. Geez a dog that hates computers how did that happen to me?

The greatest distance between two points is not starting the journey, Sandler Boggs.

I have to admit that I am becoming a huge fan of the new CNN morning show. They do quick hits of news, don’t dwell on one story all morning and don’t do a lot of entertainment news.

I was looking in my bag yesterday (I am switching bags right now) and realized I have so many different connectors and frankly I am no longer sure why. I know I need a number of them to charge various devices and connect them to my PC but there are so many. What the market needs is an octopus cable. One USB connect, then 7 little arms with Apple or USB connectors so you can connect a bunch of devices. Smaller than a hub and easier to use. You could include a mini-ac adapter so that it could be plugged in.

Or, the swiss army knife device that does everything, but when you pull out the saw it expands to a full sized saw. Then I wouldn’t need so many cables!

Sally Ride died at age 61. She was the first female astronaut. Apparently, the most critical piece of information about her was that she was gay. 27 years spent in a committed relationship. The first woman in space. Brilliant human being and scientist. She was gay. The fact that she was gay doesn’t matter to me. In fact honestly I don’;t even care. That fact that it is a headline or even that it is mentioned in her obituary bothers me. As much for what is wrong with that as anything else.

Sally Ride was a hero her entire life. She inspired many of us to strive for more. The merit of her life is without question. The fact that she had a 27 year committed relationship speaks as much of her as all of her other achievements. It is hard to be committed to another person for 5 years, let alone 27.

So to the press that included her personal choices as any part of a farewell for Sally shame on you. You made the world a little smaller by peering through your narrowly focused lens.
