I have had two iPads for awhile now. As of our trip to Indiana I am now officially down one iPad but up one happy wife. So in the end it was a good trade. Now I can get an iPad air – the only reason for the Air? M7 coprocessor. The iPhone 5s is considerably faster than my iPhone 5 was. She is also ready to ditch her windows phone. Kind of sad in the end, it’s the last windows phone in the house.

The boys and I finished the basement yesterday. In the end we were only two items short of everything needed to finish it. One was a power cable for a device that I packed into a box and now have to unpack. The other was a power strip. Somehow we moved with 20 power strips for the entire house and are now down to well, 16. Are they with the socks I lost?

In finishing the basement we setup the final pieces of the Sonos Bar. We now have XM, Amazon cloud player and several of the other Internet music sources (Pandora, Rdio etc). We also setup the projector on a table, so we can actually use the iPad and Ipod’s in the attachment. The basement looks nice and as Jackie said “its more open.”

If you are looking for a whole home sound system I cannot say enough good things about the Sonos system. It is without a doubt well worth the investment – the sound is amazing! And its as easy as 123 to add new speakers.

Time then for New Years eve, but also time for our traditional family winter movies!

No pictures today. I thought about posting a video but then realized too many days in a row with media and people might get used to that. I am shuffling my media around today trying to get everything backed up (Carbonite) and available for me to edit and consume. I have some Christmas videos and some slo-mo videos to play with.

I am a huge Carbonite fan. Just set it and forget it. I use the WD Home server for local backups (when I need to restore stuff) but its nice have a cloud backup service. I should probably upgrade my service this year as they now have imaging as part of their online backup service. Its cheaper than maintaining a home backup in the long run.

Today is organize the basement day – moving a few things around to create more room/space in the basement. I need to move the treadmill so that it is on the other side of the room. That way you can interact with the television on the wall from the couch.  I was thinking about building a bar in the basement but in the end realized I don’t really need a bar anymore. I have 22 bottles of unopened wine in the wine cooler which is one more than we had last year at this time. The sad thing – 20 of the bottles are the same as the ones we had last year. We consumed one at Thanksgiving (well 1/2 of one) and were given two as gifts. At this rate we may end up giving it away.

Time is the one thing you can’t have back.

We went to American Hustle yesterday. I was expecting a comedy so the overall darkness of the movie was a bit of a shock but it was a very interesting movie. In the end we are all hustling someone.

As the kids get older the gifts get smaller.

Dylan, Kelly, Gracie, Pyro, Gus and Nelson (who is last because he is in charge) enjoyed playing in the bamboo forest in my parents back yard.

Its raining today and heading towards a cold start to the New Year. Its that horrible winter kind of rain (cold gray sky with sheets of water pouring out. Not the nicer summer storms (although not a thunder storm) where there are warm gray skies and sheets of water pouring out).

I am considering converting the house to solar power. You can lease the system for 1o years at a very effective rate (about 1/2 what I am paying for power now) at no up front cost. I am not 100% sure about the quality which is what is holding me back. I think there is a change/advancement coming in that technology space soon that will make a difference. So for now I am on the fence. I have my whole home generator so power failures aren’t an issue anymore. I just don’t like the reality of using carbon fuel based sources of energy. I guess I am getting old.

There is a certain melancholy that spreads over the world when it rains.

In the end Christmas at Grandma’s is exhausting. Dylan played with his Cousins, Kelly, Nelson, Pyro, Gus and Gracie all day Tuesday and Wednesday. By Wednesday PM all the dogs were exhausted.

Poor Gus in the end ran to mommy for a little him time. He was exhausted as well.

Christmas was fun this year. We enjoyed the trip to Indiana. Its always good to see your family around the holidays and enjoy time with the people who care about you.

What I need to do now is setup a share on my cloud drive so everyone else in the family can download the pictures. Perhaps I will get around to that, tomorrow.

Back home again from Indiana

A wonderful (if short) visit to Indiana. Saw the family for Christmas. Quite wonderful and got to see Saving Mr. Banks a wonderful movie. We used to do that years ago, go to a movie on Christmas day. It was nice to return to old habits.

Dylan misses his cousins. He got to play for 3 days in a huge back yard at his Gma’s house. Now he wants to move to Indiana. Dylan has decided that his two consiins Kelly and Nelson are quite cool. His said on the way home last night that the jury is still out on Gracie – she is a bit of a pest in his eyes.

Gma nicely gave Dylan a squeaky toy. We really appreciated her last night as he squeaked that bloody toy until 11 pm.

Then after 12 hours of driving well 12 hours in the car we all crashed.

We hit a pothole on the Indiana Ohio border that blew out a run flat tire by Columbus  so we had a 54 minute delay waiting for a new tire for the car. Oh well. It isn’t a trip if something doesn’t go wrong.

For regular readers yesterday was one of the 3 blog days I missed in 2013.

On this day there are many things to consider. Nick has hidden in the 11 times in the past two days s but he is trying.

We left the boys at home and wandered off to see “Saving Mr. Banks.” It was a great movie. I have to say learning the reality of the Mary Poppins was simply amazing.

A day like and unlike every other

Christmas Eve.
My first Christmas Eve I was 3 days old. I don’t remember my second one, I was just over 1 years old. I don’t recall my second or even my third one really either. My fourth one I have a vague memory of snow, a big window and a white christmas tree.

The one of the early Christmas Eve’s that stands out is the first year we spent Christmas Eve in Bloomington Indiana. It may not have been our first Christmas Eve there but it is the first one I remember. I remember coming downstairs in my Pj’s with the tree lit and presents all about.

Christmas Eve though is as well I time to reflect. It is a religious holiday but it is also a time to take stock of what and where you are as a person. Scrooge taught us that we are bound as much to what we believe we are as to what people see us as. Scrooge saw himself from the ghosts as people had, did and eventually would see him. It was enough to scare him straight so be careful today on that inward journey – moderation remains key.

It is also a time of pageantry and tradition. There are places where the tree is dark until Christmas Day. There are places without a tree. There are places where the tree is only lit Christmas Day, some places where it is lit the 12 days after Christmas. So many things to review and consider.

Honor the traditions.

Take time to see how people see you.

And in the words of the song “have your self a merry little Christmas Day!”
