Crisp fall morning air – there is nothing finer than watching the leaves change color. Lots to do in the basement this weekend and need to get on the garage soon. That first frost won’t be long away and frankly would rather have two cars in the garage so we only have to scrape one.

Today is an interesting day. My baby is going to get on an airplane by herself for the first time ever. No group, no grandparents, just her flying back to Indiana. I am a little anxious about this. She is a mature capable person who can handle anything, but I guess as a dad you always want to be there to take care of your little ones.

I realized yesterday that I miss Indiana more than I miss Microsoft. That seems sad to me as I spent more time with Microsoft in the past 15 years than Indiana (12 years). But I did grow up in Indiana and like my father I moved many hours away (he grew up in the Wisconsin Dells and moved eventually to Indiana. I was born in Chicago – moved to Indiana and then Cincinnati and Maryland). I guess that rolling stone gene is present in all the Andersen males.

Time to roll.

My initial thought: What does loyalty mean? Really? 15 years? The way you say goodbye shows more of your character than anything.

Random Thoughts:

  • The Colts look lost – you can’t take away a sure hall of famer and expect them to win
  • The patriots looked good against San Diego. I know the man has talent, but I can’t root for Phillip Rivers.
  • The path to forgiveness lies in caring.
  • I have been an employee of someone else for more than 25 years now. Why do I feel so old.
  • My beloved wife said the other day “I am gearing up for retirement. But I am also trying to kickstart my career.” It’s a difficult situation for anyone to be in.
  • I watched 2 full quarters of football this weekend – that may in fact be a record length for the past five years. (longest not shortest). I did enjoy catching a bit of the New England game and I speed watched the tape delayed IU game.
  • I am loving my new job!
  • Happiness is coming home every night!
  • I transported my office mess 500 miles – but at least now I have identified the problem – too much crap not enough storage!

I left a great job in 1996. I still miss my old boss. After fifteen years of giving in my last job, I don’t feel that way. In fact I feel like the benefit I got was leaving.

I wonder what it means sometimes. After all my years trying to move forward I find sometiems that the best I’ve done is move a little sidewise rather than actually achieving my forward moving goal. Why is that? Why is it that you believe you are progressing only to find out that you were stuck in the sand and really just spinning your wheels?

Random Thoughts:

  • Why do cities label things “Greater XXX” instead of just the city of XXX blank?
  • If a road splits more than 3 times in less than a quarter mile wouldn’t it be safer for traffic to just have 3 roads?
  • Why 5 hour energy? Why not 3.4 or 4.4 hour engergy?
  • Why is it that certain people are just the people you miss?
  • I love my wife (which really isn’t a random thought, I have this thought all the time)

So yesterday I passed 70,000 steps for the past 7 days (per fitbit). It is an amazing thing when you think about it.

Random Thoughts

  • My wife and I have lived in our house for 11+ years. Prior to this house I have not lived in any one place for that long. In fact prior to that my longest was 5 years (in the house we owned in Cincinnati Ohio).
  • Someone hacked my t-mobile account – same on them!
  • iTunes updates are frustrating
  • I keep hearing Billy Joel songs in my head
  • Its nearly end of year for my employer and things are crazy.
  • Happiness is not having to do paperwork
  • I am stuck on left turns. Why is that?
  • If “this train don’t stop for…” how do you get on? And if it is that exclusive do you want to?
  • Why are trains dying? They are a beautiful way to travel.
  • Why don’t we have better public transportation in medium and smaller towns?

Just a few random Friday ruminations.

According to my weather station it is 2 degrees right now. To put that into perspective that is FREAKING cold. So cold that my furnace is working overtime. So cold that I am looking at the white terror that fell to the ground yesterday wondering why snow isn’t classified as an enemy combatant.

Oh yeah and the projected high for today 13 degrees.

Luckily I don’t have to go anywhere today. Its way to cold to be outside!

Random Thoughts:

  • Why does my back always hurt more in the winter than in the summer?
  • My mother makes the most amazing quilts its like sleeping with love wrapped around you.
  • I love when my wife laughs. She has one of those smiles that just lights up a room.
  • Explain why I hate snow? As a child I loved snow. I spent hours sledding at my grandparents house.
  • We are up a degree since I started my blog – time to break out the summer clothes
  • preparing for a trip – why does it take me so much longer now then it did as recently as a year ago?
  • I hate threats, if you make them you better be able to back them up.
  • Why are people so worried about right and wrong?
  • Love doesn’t conquer all. It merely allows for doors that aren’t there without love. What you do once you open the door is up to you.
  • Marriage is hard work, but it is also fun work.
  • I love my family.
  • My am a GPS geek, and I can’t for the life of me figure out why.
  • I love Facebook. Its nice to connect with people I haven’t’ talked to in 30 or more years.
  • When I was 10, and people moved away it was impossible to stay in touch. With Facebook we can now reconnect. But what about today’s kids, they won’t suffer that “the world is huge” loss. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

One of those special parent moments:

I got a number of comments yesterday about my MLK blog – thank you one and all. The one that impacted me personally (and no offence meant to any of the others) was my daughter telling me last night that she had read the post and really liked it. As a parent there are few moments when you realize you have an impact on your children that is positive. The negative impacts are always seen (they cry when you yell at the etc.) but a positive impact is sometimes worth a million bad days. Last night one comment made me feel like I was doing the right thing. Sometimes parenting can be like the old adage – there is precious little glory and lots of blame. Here, have a cup of blame! But it was really nice hearing that yesterday.

Random Thoughts:

  • Melting snow looks dirty
  • Falling snow looks clean
  • Snow on my driveway looks like work
  • What light through yonder window breaks? Freaking Shakespeare must have never spent January in Indiana. There is no freaking light Bill.
  • The little engine that could, did. What in the end does that mean?
  • I want a confusion converter.
  • oops I got confused for a second, I want a confusion creator.
  • Maybe a confusion equalizer?
  • oh crap I give up, I am already confused.
  • Today is the first day of this week for many but not for all (it’s the 2nd day for me) which in the end doesn’t seem fair I want to start a world holiday movement. If one person gets a day off for anything we should all get that day off. I suspect based on the places I have been that if we added them all up, there would be between 3 and 5 working days for the entire year.

Threatening Emails

Why would you threaten someone in email? I got an email today that felt very threatening to me. I am not sure why you would intentionally try to scare someone in an email.

  1. Its in writing
  2. They can keep it forever
  3. In the end, it isn’t as menacing as a person standing right in front of you
  4. But it is admissible in a court of law

Enough of that – water off the duck’s back.

Random Thoughts

  • Why do children store store so much crap under their beds?
  • Why do they look surprised when you move the beds and there is all that crap they’ve stuffed there?
  • So I am digging HD TV, HD Radio but I wonder what letters are next? CDMBA TV?
  • If you leave your left turn signal on does that make you lazy or just prepared?
  • Two rights don’t make a wrong, but four rights always get you back to where you started.
  • Two wrongs don’t make a right either, but one left can be wrong or right depending upon the left turn sign status…
  • Why send me an email? I have a record of it, forever?
  • I’m stimulating the economy – I have 3 kids!
  • I love my wife she puts up with so much crap.
  • The path to redemption and the path to salvation have an intersection but its not in my GPS…how do I get there?
  • Birds fly and planes fly, but garbage trucks with flies stink…
  • Louie the XVII of France lost his head, literally quite a few years ago this week…
  • The lines in the mall are so short I should buy next years CMas presents, now!
