Do you remember

when

walking the quiet halls

we stood

and saw what was

written on the board

the chalk rising in plumes from the board

as the scratching noise

rose

and fell with the

speed of the person

writing the message

on the wall

the chalkboard

we turned for a moment

stopped for a second

breathed in

the chalky essence

a smoky flavor

of talc

mixed with

the smell that

filling the air around us

left the message

on the wall clear

and we all knew

we all knew

as we shuffled out the door.

Remind me why I opened the door

as I sit in fading sunlight

watching

ships head out to sea

the door

now open

shattered

by repeated openings

and closings

each memory

locked in a splinter

that falling to the ground reminds the door

reminds me

reminds everyone that you cannot

be a child anymore

and leaving the door open

again

watching the sun fade away

watching the geese fade

their broken v

missing  a member

perhaps

a splinter by the door

on the ground

why did I open the door

now hanging useless from my hand

I am unchanged

but around me

lies change

and the door

will never close again…

It happened outside my door one Saturday afternoon

She paused

for a moment taking

a drag on

her cigarette

until the ember touched her fingers

and she winced

dropping the lit

cigarette to the ground

where it engulfed

a soggy piece of paper on the sidewalk

she looked down for a moment

as if to say “my bad”

but words were spoken

and she moved quickly to the doorway

the doorman

paused during the cigarette

now springing into motion

throwing the door to the wind

and

without a nod

she went inside

and the doorman

back to his quiet repose

standing asleep by the curb…

The end of football, the world and sadly my birthday

Over the past five or so years my birthday has taken a beating. Apparently a few hundred years ago when the Mayan’s were finalizing their calendar they felt it would be a good stopping point. So, December 21, 2012 is the end of the world (and my birthday). Now I was born on my parents wedding anniversary so I suspect in fact it ruins that day as well, but for now let’s focus on my birthday. There are advantages of having your birthday near Christmas (you can get one larger present etc). But now there is this looming “end of the world thing” hanging over the day.

Personally I believe that what actually happened to the Mayan calendar is that they were finishing the bad boy up when they had an NFL style labor dispute and before they were done, the workers all walked off the job. The managers could have finished the gig – but in those days the only thing a worker owned was his tools, so those walked with the workers. This resulted in an unfinished calendar and rather than admit they couldn’t solve the labor issue. So that became the end of the world, my birthday.

I suspect I am a little bitter about that.

But then, I am a little bitter about the whole NFL labor dispute as well. It probably impacts me more than the end of the world does, that is still over a year away. The NFL labor dispute is more “near term.” Although it would be a fitting end to the Super Bowl that the first and last champion came from Title Town Wisconsin. Perhaps in truth the NFL doesn’t wish to be associated with the end of the world coming soon, and wished instead to be remembered for the wonder of the 40+ Super Bowls that have been. Rather sadly than the one that would be cancelled post the end of the world in 2013. Who knows anymore. It just makes me sad that they are fighting like that.

The party ending

they would not leave

their half full glasses topped

with ice and

old scotch not

old enough to drink itself

but old enough to

go to war and die

to vote

to pour itself an apartment

music pouring from the stereo

around us

in us

in the scotch

like Martin or Sinatra

voices spinning a tale of

bourbon and ice

as the night

poured into the room

the party over

they were still there

but the scotch was gone

the whiskey empty

the last cigarette

slowly fading

its tendril of smoke reaching for the ceiling

but falling short

the ashtray full

the clock empty

and still they would not leave…

Find me a way home

in the darkness

as the wind cold

swirls around you

you struggle with the lock.

The metal is cold,

and unforgiving

reminding you of January 1987

and September 2003

remember?

Whispering to avoid the cold

your fingers turn quietly inward

bending around themselves for warmth

tucking inside themselves and

forgetting how to tie shoes

and lace boots

to sit in a quiet dark hole

and me with no way home

a lock struggling against my freezing fingers

refusing to let go

cold unforgiving metal

reminding me of pain from long ago…

let me go

you scream into the wind

swirling around you

but in the darkness and shadows

even your voice is gray

as it slides down the metal

cold to the touch

and reverberates in the empty silence of the swirling wind.

Soon there will be no I

to let go;

as you sink to the ground

September 2003 overwhelming you

the storm overtaking you

and the tears

like rivers of blood

pour to the ground and freeze.

Threatening Emails

Why would you threaten someone in email? I got an email today that felt very threatening to me. I am not sure why you would intentionally try to scare someone in an email.

  1. Its in writing
  2. They can keep it forever
  3. In the end, it isn’t as menacing as a person standing right in front of you
  4. But it is admissible in a court of law

Enough of that – water off the duck’s back.

Random Thoughts

  • Why do children store store so much crap under their beds?
  • Why do they look surprised when you move the beds and there is all that crap they’ve stuffed there?
  • So I am digging HD TV, HD Radio but I wonder what letters are next? CDMBA TV?
  • If you leave your left turn signal on does that make you lazy or just prepared?
  • Two rights don’t make a wrong, but four rights always get you back to where you started.
  • Two wrongs don’t make a right either, but one left can be wrong or right depending upon the left turn sign status…
  • Why send me an email? I have a record of it, forever?
  • I’m stimulating the economy – I have 3 kids!
  • I love my wife she puts up with so much crap.
  • The path to redemption and the path to salvation have an intersection but its not in my GPS…how do I get there?
