How devices do you have to charge. I was thinking about the the other day. The advent of smart phones have people charging that device virtually every 1-2 days. But how many other devices are you charging? Between media players, battery operated gaming systems and other personal devices (GPS, exercise equipment) you need up with many more devices now than we’ve ever had before.

The dream has always been fewer devices however.

Fewer devices that do more. One device to do everything you need to do, and present that on a 21inch monitor so old people eyes don’t have to strain to see the tiny screen (oh yeah and include a help section for how to beat Angry Bird levels).

Anyway – enough technology for today. On the quest for 3 million steps – I am at 2.1 million. I failed in my November goal of a new podcast (ran out of time) but will try to get a couple posted this month.

I found a great new walking trail on Sunday, but realized very quickly it was longer than I usually walked. By the time I made the final turn for home (facing the worst hill on the walk) I had 9.5 miles in. It was a great walk and a wonderful December day for walking. There is something about walking when it is crisp and cool outside (but not freezing) that I enjoy.

Has the time come to retire my personal lab? I have had my own computer lab in my basement for well since we lived in Cincinnati Ohio which is now nearly 14 years ago. Lately I find that I don’t use it at all other than occasional as a toy to consider. I spend more time building and playing with solutions that have nothing to do with servers anymore.

Is it time to move on? I don’t know yet, but I suspect it is.

Letting go of my lab means letting go of a piece of myself. I don’t know that I am ready for that, yet.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the people who have influenced me over the past decades of my life. I have come to realize that the most important thing for me as a person is a feeling of loyalty, both to the person and from the person who is teaching/helping/guiding/following me. I am not sure why loyalty is such a huge thing for me. It isn’t that I am disloyal myself, I tend towards loyalty to the end regardless. Its that it has become critical to me. Probably because over the past few years I can say that a number of people I was loyal to, weren’t as loyal as I thought they were. I suspect that is more painful than I realized until I started thinking about it.

What concerns me today is that maybe I am on the wrong side of the battle. Not the 300 valiantly defending the last pass between their civilization and destruction but rather just one more body on the way to an inevitable end. Is loyalty something that matters anymore? Am I teaching my children a skill that in the end won’t matter anymore?

I hope not.

I sometimes wonder if I am losing my mind. Went to a wonderful concert last night. Hosted by Montgomery College (where the bean goes) and featuring the Montgomery County orchestra. We met some folks in a meet-up group for baby boomers. All in all a great experience – the college is quite lovely. I can’t believe I hadn’t been there, until last night.

In less than 24 hours I have the complete android phone setup and operating. It just seems wrong that so much stuff is available for that phone. I can even connect my phone to my television. Where oh where did Windows Phone 7 go wrong? I hope the upcoming update (who knows when I will get it) fixes some of these issues and opens some new doors.

My next goal is getting some stuff on ebay to sell. I have actually let my seller account go empty for the past week as I didn’t take the time over the weekend to post anything. Being home really helps you get stuff done.

Time to roll – long day of meetings ahead.

23 boxes behind the ship may be sinking faster than I can bail.

I am a child of technology. I caught the passion in first grade as we watched the initial launching of America’s space program. I remember thinking at age 14 how could it would be to have a briefcase that included: A phone, a printer, a computer and a calculator. Scary but now you just need two devices (a printstick and a cellular phone).

Which leads me to today, now at home in the new house for 6 days and loving it. But no internet. I am not sure when the internet became a must have but frankly it is, and it has.

TV’s, computers and virtually everything you use on a daily basis now relies on the internet for updates, additions and what-ever-else you need in your life.

Luckily we are all set with approval and all so we can hopefully have the internet before the weekend. Two in a row would be kind of tough to take frankly.

I am a child of technology.

Where do you go when you fall?

It is a path we don’t know

it is a dream we can’t share

when we fall

you don’t take wing

and leap to flight

you simply trip upon nothing alight

falling you reach

you grab

and you struggle

but falling we don’t know where we will go.

So we reach

“help me fall”

our voices plead

fear as we grasp

for railings no longer there

for steps to be straight

for rocks to

not be waiting

perched like anvils

our bodies the hammers

that striking

expel all that was inside

and we fall.

Always falling

can we find that safe path

to what was to be?

Without falling?

Effective meetings and the dancing bears…

Innovation and the chase of perfection. There is always something we can do better. As technologists, as architects and as human beings. We race to bring about all the things in our control and place them into controlled solutions and hope the things we don’t control, don’t explode. I wonder however if there is a better way. A unified modeling language for variables within the design and human interactions we have.

Meetings:

What types of meetings are there?

  • Unstructured
  • Managed
  • Brain storming

Are there other types of meetings? Defining the three types of meetings with first unstructured. Unstructured meetings can be very successful (strong leader) or horribly offsetting (unmanaged chaos). The overall impact of of an unstructured meeting without a strong leader is significant. But what happens when someone other than the leader tries to provide structure to the meeting, or there are two below average leaders trying to lead an unstructured meeting? In my book transitional services I talk about the idea stifling impact of this type of meeting. It destroys the open communication required for effective meetings. Managed and brain storming meetings are very easily understood, a managed meeting as a distinct starting time and agenda. There is only one person managing the speaking (but not the only speaker). Brain storming meetings should have no set beginning but a maximum length where ideas are thrown out. The only structure here should be an agreement to brain storm first.

Effective meetings, and successful meetings are two very separate things. There are I am sure many other types of meetings. I once wrote about meetings that featured dancing bears with colored markers, as a description of an unstructured meeting that in the end wasn’t effective.

How do you create meetings that build the right framework for the chase for perfection?

5 devices to rule the world

My Amazon author page!!!!

So my driveway is white this morning. Do I get up and shovel the drive or do I wait for my buddy Jeff and his plow? I think, based on the fact that it is 23 degrees outside I am waiting for my buddy Jeff. I love the picture of snow out of my window but I hate the reality of snow on the roads and my driveway. I guess I am of “two-minds” when it comes to snow.

Five devices I love (updated list)

  1. HTC HD7
  2. XBOX 360 + Kinect
  3. Kindle
  4. Asus Laptop (either the laptop or the netbook both rock)
  5. Logitech Squeezebox

I find this list changes frequently now. Windows Phone 7 is rapidly becoming the most favorite device for the longest time at the number 1 slot. However the Kinect stuff is catching up. I am fairly certain that the other devices will catch up over time however. Asus has really come a long way as a computer maker. They used to be on the lower end of the spectrum but now have great PC’s at both ends. I love my little multi-touch laptop and I love my big media laptop. So congrats to Asus for improving their product lines.

The kindle has been featured on my list as has the Squeezebox a couple of times.

Anyway time to get rolling for the day…
